The United States Supreme Court allowed its decision in Callais v. Louisiana to take effect immediately, according to a May 5 statement from Attorney General Liz Murrill. The ruling struck down Louisiana’s congressional map, and the Court’s action removed the usual waiting period for implementing the decision.
This development is significant because it allows Louisiana to move forward without delay in adopting a new congressional map and setting new election dates. The expedited judgment aims to protect voters’ constitutional rights ahead of upcoming elections.
Attorney General Liz Murrill said, “This case is a major win for Louisiana. We are moving forward immediately to ensure the constitutional rights of our citizens are protected and to fix the unconstitutional map. Louisiana is continuing to follow the law.”
Justice Samuel Alito noted in his concurrence that no party indicated an intent to seek rehearing, emphasizing that prompt action was necessary given ongoing election deadlines.
Murrill will continue working with state lawmakers on compliance with the Court’s ruling and plans to defend against any lawsuits challenging lawful implementation or threatening election integrity.
The Louisiana Supreme Court advances access to justice initiatives, maintains judicial integrity, administers justice effectively, upholds high standards for judges and attorneys, operates under a Chief Justice among seven elected justices, serves communities statewide, provides administrative oversight of all courts within the unified judicial system, and supports efforts addressing societal issues such as truancy, according to the official website.
