A St. Bernard Parish resident, Abe Jyles, 44, was sentenced on May 27, 2025, to 130 months in prison following his guilty plea to federal gun and drug charges. U.S. District Judge Wendy Vitter presided over the case where Jyles admitted to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and intent to distribute methamphetamine, marijuana, heroin, and cocaine. Additionally, he was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Jyles’ sentence includes five years of supervised release and a $300 mandatory special assessment fee. His federal supervised release from a previous 2006 drug trafficking conviction was revoked by United States District Judge Jay Zainey due to the new offenses. Judge Zainey imposed an additional consecutive sentence of 27 months.

The incident leading to these charges occurred on February 29, 2024, when Jyles was stopped by the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office during a traffic stop. Officers detected marijuana odor emanating from his vehicle which led to his detention. A subsequent search revealed illegal narcotics including four firearms inside the vehicle.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community collaboration and strategic law enforcement priorities.

The investigation involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office with prosecution managed by Assistant United States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu Jr., from the Narcotics Unit.
