Gerard Carr, a 27-year-old resident of New Orleans, was sentenced on Jan. 22 to 137 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan also ordered Carr to serve three years of supervised release and pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
Carr’s sentencing follows his involvement in an April 2025 shootout outside a convenience store on North Galvez Street in New Orleans. According to court documents, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at a residence linked to Carr one week after the incident and recovered the firearm used during the shootout. Prior to this offense, Carr had been convicted of several felonies in Orleans Parish, including conspiracy to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute heroin, conspiracy to possess a firearm while possessing a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm while possessing a controlled dangerous substance, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and illegally possessing a stolen firearm.
This conviction marks Carr’s ninth felony offense. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to use the full resources of the Department of Justice against illegal immigration and violent crime by targeting cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The initiative coordinates efforts from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood program.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman from the Violent Crime Unit prosecuted it.
