Kyle Conerly, age 33, was sentenced on March 25 by U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to serve 33 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to an April 3 announcement from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The sentencing follows an incident on November 20, 2023, when New Orleans Police Department officers were conducting surveillance at a residence in the Holly Grove neighborhood. When officers moved in to make arrests, Conerly ran into the backyard and threw a loaded handgun over a fence. Due to prior convictions for attempted second degree murder and manslaughter in Orleans Parish, Conerly is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Conerly will also be required to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee as part of his sentence.

The case falls under Operation Take Back America, which is described as “a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.” The operation coordinates efforts from both Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood programs.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman handled prosecution duties.
