Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced the sentencing of Jarrod Carter, a 30-year-old New Orleans resident, for being a felon in possession of firearms. On June 26, 2025, U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown sentenced Carter to 97 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts under Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8). Following his imprisonment, Carter will be on supervised release for three years and must pay a $200 special assessment fee.
Court records indicate that in January 2023, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) received a complaint about individuals brandishing firearms and distributing narcotics on Mandeville Street. Further investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force and NOPD officers found Carter in possession of a loaded Taurus .40 caliber handgun with an obliterated serial number and a loaded Springfield AR-15 style rifle. As a convicted felon, Carter is prohibited from possessing firearms.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department launched an enhanced violent crime reduction strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021.
The Drug Enforcement Administration and the New Orleans Police Department investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tracey N. Knight.
