Olin D. Grant, Jr., 30, of Marrero, was indicted on April 16 for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle on Apr. 20.
The indictment alleges that Grant was found with a Glock Model 19X pistol on January 14 in the Eastern District of Louisiana after having been previously convicted of crimes punishable by more than one year in prison. The charge carries a potential sentence of up to fifteen years imprisonment, a fine up to $250,000, up to three years supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee.
This prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, described as “a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.” The operation involves coordination with Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.
Courcelle said: “the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated this case; Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed is prosecuting it.
