A New Orleans resident, Erin Alonzo, was indicted on March 5 for multiple federal charges related to firearms and controlled substances, according to a March 17 announcement by United States Attorney David I. Courcelle.
The indictment alleges that Alonzo, age 28, possessed with intent to distribute fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine; possessed firearms during a drug trafficking crime; illegally possessed a machinegun; and illegally possessed firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon. These charges fall under several sections of Title 21 and Title 18 of the United States Code.
Court records state that on December 8, 2025, Alonzo allegedly had more than forty grams of a mixture containing fentanyl along with cocaine and methamphetamine. He is also accused of possessing multiple firearms—including a Glock Model 23 pistol modified with a conversion device—while engaged in drug trafficking. Due to a prior felony conviction for obstruction of justice in connection with a homicide investigation, Alonzo is prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition.
If convicted on all counts, Alonzo faces significant penalties: up to forty years imprisonment for possession with intent to distribute controlled substances; up to life imprisonment for possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime; up to ten years for illegal possession of a machinegun; and up to fifteen years for illegal possession of firearms as a felon. Fines could total $5 million plus additional mandatory special assessment fees.
Courcelle said, “the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and New Orleans Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn E. Schiffman is prosecuting it as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities.
