Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced that Tyrique Richards, a 28-year-old from Marrero, has been sentenced to 66 months in prison. The sentencing was delivered by U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier on June 10, 2025. Richards had previously pleaded guilty to charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, as well as possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Richards will also be required to pay a mandatory $100 special assessment fee and will be placed on supervised release for three years following his imprisonment.
Court documents reveal that Richards was arrested on February 27, 2024, by members of the New Orleans Gang Task Force under local parish attachments. At the time of his arrest, he was found with marijuana, cocaine, a digital scale, and a Glock firearm.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department launched an enhanced violent crime reduction strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into this case. Assistant United States Attorney Mike Trummel from the Violent Crimes Unit led the prosecution.
