Many Louisiana residents are expected to turn to online shopping during Cyber Monday, opting to avoid the crowds typically seen on Black Friday. However, officials warn that shopping online comes with its own set of risks.

“Cyber Monday is a great and easy way to avoid all the crowded stores on Black Friday, but you still need to protect yourself from scammers who could be looking to steal your identity and hard-earned money. Don’t become a victim this holiday shopping season. I urge all consumers to make sure the website and company are legitimate, and then review the company’s return policy and warranty information before you click purchase,” said Attorney General Liz Murrill.

Attorney General Murrill offered several tips for safe online shopping. She advised consumers to check that websites are secure by ensuring there is an “s” in https:// within the URL address. Shoppers should also be cautious of fake or look-alike websites, use credit cards for purchases to help dispute unauthorized charges if needed, watch out for offers that seem too good to be true, and carefully read fine print along with return policies.
