A Honduran national, Jhosmy Josue Perez-Alvarez, was sentenced in New Orleans on August 26, 2025, for possessing a firearm while unlawfully present in the United States. The sentencing was announced by Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson.

According to court records, Perez-Alvarez, age 24, was found with a Glock nine-millimeter handgun on January 2, 2025. He admitted to being in the country illegally at the time of his arrest and acknowledged that his status prohibited him from possessing a firearm.

Perez-Alvarez received a sentence of 20 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release and must pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee. After serving his prison term, he will be transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody for deportation proceedings to Honduras.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, which focuses on using Department of Justice resources to address illegal immigration and combat violent crime through coordinated efforts involving Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson commended the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations and the New Orleans Police Department for their investigative work. Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis of the General Crimes Unit led the prosecution.
