Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced that Carlos Rene Medina-Ayala, a 48-year-old native of Honduras, has been indicted for illegal reentry of a removed alien. The indictment was issued on June 20, 2025, following his discovery in the United States on June 2, 2025. Medina-Ayala had previously been deported on November 7, 2013.

If convicted, Medina-Ayala faces up to two years in prison, a fine up to $250,000, up to one year of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. Simpson emphasized that an indictment is merely a charge and guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Simpson commended the United States Border Patrol for their role in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit is leading the prosecution.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to combat illegal immigration and dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The operation coordinates efforts with the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.
