A Honduran citizen, Jose Luis Paz-Bonilla, 47, has been charged with illegal reentry into the United States after previously being removed. The charge was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

According to the bill of information filed on November 21, 2025, Paz-Bonilla is accused of reentering the country around November 3, 2025. He had previously been removed from the United States on or about September 21, 2000.

If convicted, Paz-Bonilla could face up to two years in prison, a fine as high as $250,000, up to three years of supervised release following imprisonment, and a mandatory special assessment of $100.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson stated: “A bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Simpson also acknowledged the efforts of the United States Border Patrol in investigating this case. Assistant United States Attorney Irene González is leading the prosecution.

This prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative designed to coordinate Department of Justice resources against illegal immigration and related criminal organizations. The operation integrates work from programs such as Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
