A Hammond man has been sentenced for violating federal drug laws. Kylin Sexton, 25, received a sentence of time served after being found in possession of marijuana and cocaine hydrochloride. U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown issued the sentence on July 24, 2025. Sexton will also serve three years of supervised release following his release from prison.

According to court records, the Ponchatoula Police Department responded to a call at a retail establishment on May 18, 2022. The complaint indicated that Sexton’s cousin, Tyshon Coleman, had a firearm. Officers found both men inside a vehicle in the parking lot. When approached by police, Coleman refused to show his hands or comply with officers’ commands to exit the vehicle.

After removing Coleman from the vehicle, police discovered a Glock Model 17 handgun with an extended magazine containing 30 rounds of ammunition between the passenger seat and center console. The firearm was equipped with a machine gun conversion device known as a “Glock switch.”

Coleman pleaded guilty to possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possession of a machine gun on September 19, 2024. He was sentenced to over eight years (106 months) in prison on December 19, 2024.

During the same incident, officers observed a green backpack on the driver’s side floorboard where Sexton was seated. Upon searching the backpack, they found marijuana and cocaine hydrochloride packaged for distribution.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed prosecuted the case as part of the Violent Crime/Strike Force Unit.

“Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced that KYLIN SEXTON (“SEXTON”), age 25, a resident of Hammond, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown on July 24, 2025, to a sentence of time served, for possessing marijuana and cocaine hydrochloride, in violation of 21 U.S.C. §§ 841(a)(1) and (b)(1)(C). Additionally, SEXTON was ordered to serve three (3) years of supervised release following his release from prison.”
