A Guatemalan citizen, Yovani Alexander Canu-Gonzalez, age 25, has pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal reentry into the United States after being previously removed. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle.

Court documents indicate that Canu-Gonzalez reentered the country around July 29, 2024, following a prior removal on May 24, 2023. He faces sentencing on May 13, 2026, before U.S. District Judge Greg G. Guidry.

If convicted, Canu-Gonzalez could receive a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine as high as $250,000, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100. He may also be placed under supervised release for up to one year following any imprisonment.

U.S. Attorney Courcelle acknowledged the efforts of the United States Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in investigating the case. The prosecution is being led by Assistant United States Attorney Irene González from the General Crimes Unit.
