Beverly Watson McNabb, a 62-year-old resident of Greensburg, Louisiana, has pleaded guilty to theft of government funds in federal court. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Ellison C. Travis. The plea was entered before U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick.
According to statements made during her plea, McNabb had access to the commercial bank account of an elderly family member, identified as R.W., who received retirement benefits from the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) through direct deposit. After R.W.’s death on or about December 5, 2015, McNabb continued to access and use the SSA benefits deposited into the account.
Between December 2015 and at least April 7, 2020, McNabb used these funds for personal expenses including a wedding dress and other items purchased from restaurants, supermarkets, and even a prison commissary for friends. She also made several cash withdrawals for additional personal purchases. The total amount stolen over this period is approximately $50,000.
McNabb’s conviction for federal program theft carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison, a fine up to $250,000, and supervised release.
The investigation was conducted by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General and the United States Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Edward H. Warner is prosecuting the case.
