Ahmad Banks, a 26-year-old resident of New Orleans, was charged on March 24 with mail theft by a United States Postal Employee, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle.
The case centers on allegations that Banks, while employed as a letter carrier delivering U.S. mail in Metairie, Louisiana, took a letter from his delivery route on or about January 26, 2024. Prosecutors say he intended to remove and keep the contents for himself.
Courcelle said that the Bill of Information is only a charge at this stage and emphasized that “the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” The investigation into the alleged offense was conducted by the United States Postal Service-Office of Inspector General.
Assistant United States Attorney Irene González of the General Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution. Courcelle praised the work done by investigators in bringing forward these charges.
The broader implications highlight ongoing efforts to maintain trust in public services such as mail delivery and reinforce accountability among federal employees.
