Gerard Carr, a 27-year-old resident of New Orleans, pleaded guilty on September 30, 2025, to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The plea was entered before U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan. Carr’s conviction is for violating federal laws that prohibit felons from possessing firearms.

Court documents indicate that in April 2025, Carr was involved in a shootout outside a convenience store on North Galvez Street in New Orleans. A week after the incident, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at a residence linked to Carr and recovered the firearm used during the shootout. Before this offense, Carr had multiple felony convictions in Orleans Parish. These included conspiracy to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute heroin, conspiracy to possess a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and illegally possessing a stolen firearm.

Carr faces up to 15 years in prison, fines up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release following imprisonment, and must pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America. According to the Department of Justice: “Operation Take Back America is a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.” The operation combines efforts from Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman from the Violent Crime Unit is prosecuting the case.
